일본은 만화나 애니메이션으로 유명합니다.
하지만 그들은 하위문화로 소비되는 경향이 있습니다. 만약 그들의 근본을 찾아 나가다 보면, 고전이나 고화에 그 뿌리를 두고 있다는 사실을 알 수 있습니다.
많은 수의 고전들은 주로 동물들이 등장인물로 나옵니다.
그 이야기들 속에서는 동물이 인간의 역할을 하거나, 혹은 인간이 동물을 역할을 하기도 합니다.
전 동물들이 인간들에게 자연스럽게 하는 행동들이나 혹은 인간들이 동물에게 자연스럽게 하는 행동들을 비교해봅니다.
저는 제 작품에서 주로 얼굴이 희미하여 제대로 보이지 않는 사람들의 세계를 묘사해 그립니다. 그들은 제 자신 일수도 있고, 당신일 수도 있고, 아무도 그들의 정체를 알 수 없습니다.
한눈에 보기에 그들은 상상의 세계에 존재하는 것처럼 보이지만, 실제로는 현대 사회에서 영감을 얻어 이 세계를 만들었습니다.
현대사회는 정보가 범람하고 있어 무엇이 옳은 것인지 판단하기가 어렵습니다. 신경을 쓰지 않는다면 마치 가상에 있는 것처럼 이 모든 걸 깨닫지 못하고 지나칠 수도 있습니다.
세상에서 일어나는 일들과 당신 주변에서 일어나는 일들 사이에는 갭(간격)이 있다고 느낄 수도 있습니다. 특히나 일본 같은 섬나라에 살고 있다면 마치 텅 빈 극장에 있는 것 같은 느낌을 들 수도 있습니다.
하지만 사실 세계는 연결되어 있어 누가 언제 피해자가 될 지 알 수 없습니다.
제 작품은 저 먼 곳에 떨어져 있는 것처럼 보이는 세계를 묘사하지만 실제로는 그 관찰자들이 오늘날 현재에 존재하고 있는 현실을 다시 한번 깨닫게 하는 것이 제 의도입니다.
Japan is famous for its manga and animations.
However, they tend to be consumed as subcultures.
If you follow their roots, they will connect with fables and old paintings.
There are many traditional fairy tales that use animals as their characters.
In those stories, they use animals to play roles of human beings, and sometimes people to play roles of animals.
I will compare the actions that animals perform naturally to people or those performed by people naturally to animals.
I primarily depict a world of people whose faces
are not clearly visible in my work.
They could be me, they could be you, their identities are not known.
At a glance, they seem as though they are residents of an imaginary world but I actually created this world based on inspiration from modern society.
Modern society is inundated with information and it is difficult to judge what is right. Unless you are aware of it, you may simply pass by it unnoticing, as if it were all fictitious.
You feel as though there is a gap between what is happening in the world and what is happening around you, particularly if you live in Japan, an island country, it may seem like an empty theatre.
But in actual fact, the world is connected and no one knows when they could be the victim of what.
Whilst my artwork depicts a world which may seem at a glance to be far, far away, my intention is in fact to have the observer again become aware of the reality they exist in now, today.
