나는 사람들과 장소에 대한 정보들을 다양한 경로를 통해 접해보고 그것을 바탕으로 기학적인 방법으로 표현하는 작업을 한다.
작품은 작업의 등장인물과 배경을 수집한 후 회화로 재해석 하는 방법을 사용하는데 먼저 주변 인물들과의 대화와 새로운 장소에 대한 경험을 소리, 사진, 메모, 비디오 등으로 모아 기록한 후 경험을 통해 수집된 자료들은 그 인물에서 나오는 특유의 느낌과 장소의 느낌으로 색과 도형, 패턴으로서 대상에 대한 생각과 인상, 상징적인 형상으로 표현한다.
이번 모산조형미술관( Mosan Art Museum )에서 작업한 작품들은 레지던스 프로그램에 함께 입주한 작가들 및 운영진분들과 나눈 대화와 경험들을 바탕으로 새로운 인물 과 장소에 대한 기록으로서 작업했다.
My work involves creating geometric expressions of information about people and places, which I access by taking different paths.
My creative process consists in collecting people and backgrounds that will appear in my works and reinterpreting those elements in paintings. To begin with, I record my conversations with people around me and my experiences of new places in the form of sounds, photographs, notes, and videos.
Then I turn the data collected through my experiences into my thoughts, impressions, and symbolic figures of the objects in colors, figures, and patterns in such ways that my works express the feelings unique to those people and places.
The works I created for the Mosan Art Museum are the result of my recordings of new people and places based on the dialogs and experiences I shared with the artists and staff who joined the residency program at the museum.
따뜻한 시선으로 인간을 탐구하는 작가 – 손민광
손민광의 관심은 인간이다. 그는 인간에 대한 다양한 관점을 시각화하는 작가다. 그의 작업은 살면서 만나게 되는 사람들에 대해 자신의 시각으로 대상을 관찰하고 탐구하는 것으로부터 시작된다. 그 대상은 직접 만나는 사람일 수도 있고 SNS상으로 교류하는 사람일수도 있으며 본인과 전혀 관계가 없는 언론에 의해 알게 된 사람일 수도 있다.
그는 대상이 되는 인물을 다양한 방법으로 리서치하고 탐구한다. 광범위하게 자료를 수집하고 분석한다. 본인의 주변인물일 경우 직접적인 인터뷰나 대화의 녹취를 포함하여 직접적인 자료수집의 방법을 쓴다. 그러나 유명인이나 언론을 통해 관심을 갖게 된 인물의 경우 일화나 사건 등 인터넷 매체를 통해 수집할 수 있는 객관적 자료들을 통해 작업을 진행한다.
이러한 작업 태도는 그의 인간에 대한 관심에서 나온다고 볼 수 있다. 그는 근본적으로 인간에 대하여 관심이 많고 따라서 지속적으로 탐구하고 있는 것이다.
손민광의 작업 방향은 표현주의적 기법에서 큐비즘과 팝아트의 혼합된 형태로 변해왔다. 2016년까지의 작품에서는 격렬한 붓질에 의해 인간의 내면세계를 표출하는 기법으로 다분히 표현주의적 방향이었다. 그때도 근본적으로 인간에 대한 관심과 탐구는 작품의 중심테마였다. 그러나 모든 작품의 제목은 무제(Untitled)였다. 이는 시각적 대상의 포괄적 표현행위에 대한 익명성과 보편성을 드러내는 제목이라 할 수 있다.
2017년부터 작업이 크게 변모하게 되는데 우선 매체와 장르의 다양한 시도로부터 시작되었다. 영상작업이나 입체작업을 통해 좀 더 현대적 시각표현에 접근하였고 평면회화에서도 본인의 새로운 시각과 관점을 드러내는 방법을 찾게 되었다. 기하학적인 면 분할과 평면적 화면처리에 의한 작업의 결과물은 큐비즘과 팝아트의 혼합된 형태로 드러난다.
아직 시작하는 작가의 작업이기 때문에 앞으로 어떻게 변할지는 알 수 없다. 다만 한 가지 예상되는 것은 인간에 대한 관심은 계속 될 것 같다. 그러면서 작업의 매체와 방법의 변화가 있을 것으로 예측된다. 새로운 것을 시도하고 도전하는 것을 멈추지 않는 것은 열린 마음과 긍정적인 태도를 갖고 있기 때문이다. 신진 작가로서의 바람직한 자세라 할 수 있다.

Artist who explores humanity with warmth
Son Min-gwang shows interest in humanity. He is an artist who visualizes diverse perspectives on humanity. He begins his work by observing and studying his objects, for instance, people he gets to meet in his life, from his point of view. Such objects can be people he meets in person, people he interacts with on social media, or people he becomes familiar with but has no relation to through mass media.
He researches and studies those people who become his objects in a variety of ways: he collects and analyzes data extensively. If those people happen to be his acquaintances, he incorporates recordings of one-on-one interviews or conversations into his data collection process. However, if such people are celebrities or someone he becomes interested in through media, he collects objective data such as anecdotes and incidents related to them through Internet media.
His attitude to work stems from his interest in humanity. Fundamentally, he is greatly interested in people and continuously studies them.
Son Min-gwang’s artistic approach has changed from expressionistic techniques to a mix of cubism and popart. His works up until 2016 express humans’ inner worlds with wild brush strokes, evocative of expressionism. Even then, the central themes of his works were interest in and study of humanity. However, all his works were then entitled “Untitled,” indicating the anonymity and universality of his general act of expressing his graphic objects.
It was in 2017 that his style underwent a great transformation, which began with his various experiments in media and genre. He drew near to a more modern style of visual expression through his video and three-dimensional works. Even in two-dimensional paintings, he found ways to express his newfound perspective and point of view. The result of this creative process, which involved geometric splitting of planes and two-dimensional screens, was a mix of cubism and pop art.
He is still in the early stages of his artistic career, and what he will become as an artist remains to be seen. However, we can expect one thing for sure: his ongoing interest in humanity. We can also expect some change in medium and methodology in his future works, because he is not afraid of trying new things and has an open mind and a positive attitude towards art. For an emerging artist, it is desirable to have such an attitude.
